Take care of your Birkenstocks: a practical guide to extending their life
Birkenstocks are more than just sandals. They're comfortable, timeless, and made from natural materials like cork, leather, and suede. But to last you through many summers (or winters), they require some basic care.
In this guide, we'll tell you how to clean, protect, and maintain your Birkenstocks. And if you prefer, you can watch the brand's official videos at the end or discover all the care products we have available atECRU .
1. Keep them away from heat
Avoid leaving your sandals in the sun, inside the car, or near heat sources. The cork and natural latex insole can dry out or warp. If they get wet, let them dry at room temperature in the shade.
2. Gentle but frequent cleaning
You don't need harsh products. A soft brush and a damp cloth are sufficient for most models. If you have the official cleaning kit, even better:
🧽 Use the sponge dry or with a little of the specific cleaner to remove stains from the insole.
3. Brush gently
If the model is suede or nubuck, brush with gentle movements to keep the material looking good.
4. Protect the cork
Cork is one of the most delicate elements of footwear. Apply a specific sealant to prevent it from cracking over time.
5. Nourishes the leather
If your Birkenstocks are made of smooth leather, you can apply a small amount of leather conditioner. Avoid using it on suede or nubuck.
6. Storage
When not in use, store them in a dry, well-ventilated place without crushing them. If you have the original cotton bag, even better.
