Dr. Martens Size Guide

Dr. Martens Size Guide

Dr. Martens boots and shoes have a consistent last, but the feel can vary slightly between styles (Classic 1460 boots, Jadon, 1461 shoes, sandals, etc.). Use this guide to find the right size based on your foot length and width.

How to measure your foot

You need:

  • Two sheets of paper (A4)
  • A fine-tipped pen
  • A ruler or a meter stick
  • Socks similar to those you'll wear with your Dr. Martens
  1. Place the sheets of paper against the wall. Stand on them, with your heels firmly against the wall.
  2. Mark on the sheet the longest point of each foot (the tip of the most forward toe).
  3. Also mark the widest points to the left and right of the foot.
  4. Measure the distance from the wall to the tip mark (length) and between the side points (width) and compare it to the size chart.

Tip: Measure both feet at the end of the day and use the result of the longer/wider foot.

Dr. Martens size conversion

The length and width measurements are approximate and intended to help you choose a size. If you are between two sizes, it is usually more comfortable to choose the larger one, especially for rigid boots or if you plan to wear thick socks.

Frequently Asked Questions about Dr. Martens Sizes

How do Dr. Martens generally fit?

Many Dr. Martens models run slightly large, but the instep may feel tight at first. It's normal for the boot to feel somewhat stiff during the first few uses: the leather gradually molds to your foot.

I'm between two sizes, which one should I choose?

If you're between sizes and plan to wear thick socks or prefer a relaxed fit, it's usually more comfortable to choose the larger size. If you prefer a snugger fit and your foot isn't particularly wide, you can opt for the smaller size, keeping in mind that the leather will stretch slightly with wear.

Does the style (boot, shoe, sandal) influence the size?

Yes, the fit can vary: classic boots tend to wrap more around the ankle, derby shoes are somewhat lighter, and sandals tend to feel more open. If you already own a pair of Dr. Martens in a specific size, use them as a reference, but always consult the size guide if you change your footwear style.

Should I measure my foot with or without socks?

Always measure while wearing the type of socks you normally wear with your Dr. Martens. If you plan to wear them in winter with thicker socks, keep this in mind when choosing your size or add a small allowance to the measurement.

What should I do if I notice chafing when I try them on at first?

It's normal for a new pair of Dr. Martens boots to need a short break-in period. Wear them around the house first, with slightly thicker socks, and gradually increase the amount of time you wear them. If they're still very uncomfortable after several days, you may need half a size up or a model with a last that's better suited to your foot type.
