GRAMICCIPants · which to choose

A webbing belt, a diamond in the crotch and several cuts around them.

Gramicci started out making climbing clothes in Yosemite, and the trousers are still its core piece. At ECRU we carry seven models: the original G-Pants, two Loose Tapered, the straight-leg Dobby Plaid, the Hemp Canvas Double Knee, the canvas El Cap and the Gadget with its big pockets.

In short

Which is the classic? The G-Pants (G102): cotton twill, elastic waist with integrated belt, diamond crotch gusset and a relaxed cut that tapers slightly towards the hem.

What if I want another cut? The Loose Tapered for more room up top and a narrow hem; the Dobby Plaid for a straight leg; the Hemp Canvas Double Knee or the El Cap for a heavier fabric; the Gadget if you carry things in your pockets.

01 · The origin

A climbing pant for everyday

Gramicci has been making outdoor clothing since 1982. Its founder, Mike Graham, was one of the Stonemasters, the generation of climbers who lived in Yosemite, and he started with a pair of climbing shorts; the long version, the G-Pants, came next. Two details defined them: a diamond-shaped crotch gusset, borrowed from a pair of kung-fu trousers, that allows a 180-degree stride, and a nylon webbing belt built into the waist.

Those two details run through much of the line, which is why a pair of Gramicci pants is easy to spot. We tell the story of the brand and its time in Japan in Gramicci: origin, functional design and Japanese outdoor style. Here we keep it practical: what changes from one model to the next and which one suits you.

02 · Which to choose

Four ways to decide

01

The original

The G-Pants: relaxed cut, elastic waist and a belt you adjust with one hand. If you prefer a straight leg, the Dobby Plaid G-Pant Straight Fit keeps the same details in a small-check cotton.

02

Roomy up top, narrow below

The Loose Tapered leaves more room in the hips and thighs and narrows towards the hem. The G103 is organic cotton twill with a slightly short length; the Ridge has patch pockets front and back.

03

More fabric

The Hemp Canvas Double Knee is cotton and hemp canvas, with double knee panels and a straight cut. The El Cap is 12 oz cotton Oxford canvas, roomy, with wide-mouth pockets.

04

More pockets

The Gadget has large canvas pockets that wrap from the front to the back and a logo tape on the right side to clip your keys or a bottle.

04 · How to wear them

With a T-shirt, a sweatshirt or an overshirt

As almost all of them have an elastic waist and belt, they need no extra belt and adjust quickly. The twill ones, like the G-Pants or the Loose Tapered, work with a T-shirt or a sweatshirt and trainers; the canvas ones, like the Hemp Canvas Double Knee or the El Cap, have more body and go well with an overshirt or a work jacket when it gets cooler.

On sizing: for this season’s models the ECRU size selector shows Gramicci’s US size, and the label may also give the Asian size: US S corresponds to Asia M. If you are looking for something similar from another brand, the Kappy Bio Cotton Cargo is cotton, relaxed in shape and has drawcords at the hem.

FAQ

Questions about Gramicci pants

What is the difference between the G-Pants and the Loose Tapered?

The G-Pants has a relaxed cut that tapers slightly towards the hem. The Loose Tapered leaves more room in the hips and thighs and narrows more from the knee to the hem.

What is the diamond crotch gusset for?

It is a diamond-shaped piece of fabric sewn into the crotch. Gramicci borrowed it from a pair of kung-fu trousers so climbers could stretch their legs wide. It features on the G-Pants, the Dobby Plaid, the Loose Tapered Ridge and the Hemp Canvas Double Knee, among others.

How do Gramicci pants fit?

For this season’s models, the selector shows the US size: US XS equals Asia S, US S Asia M, US M Asia L and US L Asia XL. The elastic waist and belt adjust the waist, but it is worth checking hips, thighs and length too.
