Journal · Signature piece
The brand's chore jacket: named after a baker, with a diagonal buttonhole and layered pockets.
If one piece sums up Universal Works, it's the Bakers Jacket. It has been in the collection since the brand's earliest days and has become its signature: a simple work jacket made to be worn every day, over almost anything.
In short
What is it? Universal Works' take on the chore jacket, the classic work layer, with three details of its own: a diagonal buttonhole, shaping seams and layered pockets.
Which one? Twill Black for the most versatile; Light Olive for the brand's classic contrast; Fine Cord if you'd rather wear it as a lighter overshirt.
01 · Origins
A baker's jacket
The chore jacket was the protective layer you put on to work. Universal Works took that idea and gave it a name of its own: it comes from the father of the brand's founder and designer, who was a baker and worked in a simple coverall.
It keeps the essentials of that work jacket: practical, unstructured and with useful pockets. What makes it recognisable are the details.

02 · Details
What gives it away
01
Diagonal buttonhole
On the button stand, one of the brand's most recognisable details. One look and you know whose jacket it is.
02
Shaping seams
Instead of a flat, boxy cut, the seams build the silhouette so the jacket sits better on the body.
03
Layered pockets
Pockets in layers that add both function and character, straight from workwear.

Think about what goes underneath
It's a jacket made to go over a T-shirt, a shirt or a fine knit. Before choosing a size, bear these three things in mind.
01
The layer underneath
With a T-shirt or shirt, your usual size. If you want to wear it over a chunky jumper, try it with one or ask us.
02
Twill doesn't stretch
It's 100% cotton: it won't give like a knit. Keep that in mind if you're between sizes.

05 · How to wear it
Three formulas
The Bakers goes with almost everything, but there are three combinations the brand returns to season after season. Which trousers? Compare the four fits in our Universal Works trousers guide.
01
Casual suit
Bakers Twill Black with the Pleated Track Pant Twill Black. The same twill top and bottom, without the stiffness of a suit.
02
Classic contrast
Light Olive over a light T-shirt and dark trousers: the brand's most recognisable formula.
03
In winter
Underneath, a cardigan or a Wool Fleece waistcoat. The jacket becomes your outer layer.

FAQs
Before you choose
Is a Bakers Jacket the same as a chore jacket?
The Bakers is a chore jacket, but with Universal Works' own design: the diagonal buttonhole, shaping seams and layered pockets.
Can it be dressed up?
Yes. In black, with trousers in the same twill, it works as a casual blazer.
What's the difference between the jacket and the Fine Cord overshirt?
The overshirt keeps the spirit of the Bakers, but in fine corduroy and at a lighter weight, closer to a heavy shirt.
Do you ship outside Spain?
Yes. Order online at ecru.es and if you're unsure about sizing, get in touch before you order.
