Levi's has been making the same item since 1873: five-pocket jeans with rivets. That year, Levi Strauss and tailor Jacob Davis patented metal rivets at stress points in work trousers. The 501 emerged from that invention, the cut from which virtually all denim today descends.

How to choose a Levi's jeans cut

Levi's numbers identify the cut, not the size. The 501 is the original: straight, high-rise and with a button fly. The 511 is slim, fitted without being tight. The 512 combines a fitted thigh with tapering towards the ankle. Dad and Baggy cuts are roomy and high-rise, while the women’s Ribcage has the highest rise in the range.

Sizes are read in inches: W is waist circumference and L is leg length. The same cut number can fit differently depending on the wash, because rigid denim relaxes with wear while stretch denim does not.
