Find out how to measure your feet, choose narrow or regular width and check the fit of your Birkenstock sandals.

Your foot should sit centrally in the contoured footbed, with a little room in front of the toes and behind the heel.

Before choosing a size

Some space is normal when trying the flat sandal while standing. Your foot moves and the sandal flexes as you walk. Too little room can leave your toes or heel on the rim.

The right size supports your whole foot within the footbed, without overhanging or excessive movement.

How Birkenstock sandals should fit

Correct fit

Leave room in front of your toes

Your toes should not touch the front rim. A small gap allows movement when walking.

Leave room behind your heel too

Your heel should not sit against the back rim, which could become uncomfortable when walking.

Too small

A foot at the rim may need a larger size

Toes or heels too close to the rim leave insufficient space, even if the fit seems fine when standing.

Incorrect width

Check the width if your foot feels squeezed

If your foot presses against the sides, try regular width or reassess the size and width combination.

Too large

Excessive room may mean the size is too large

Allow some space, but not so much that your foot slides around. Consider a smaller size or a different width combination.

Straps should support without squeezing

Adjust the straps for secure support with a little room for movement. Tightening them cannot fix an incorrect size.

Overtight straps restrict movement and can cause discomfort. Secure the foot without compressing the instep.

Toes should not touch or overhang the front.
The heel should not rest against the back rim.
Keep the foot centred within the footbed.
Leave a little space, without an excessive gap.
Straps should hold without squeezing.
Check width or size and width together if the foot presses against the sides.

How to choose your size

Measure foot length: mark the heel and longest toe on paper and measure the distance in millimetres.
Also measure width: measure the widest part of your foot for comparison with the chart.
Check the chart: find your length and compare narrow and regular widths.
Check the actual fit: the chart is a guide; your foot should sit centrally, with room and without overhanging.

What narrow and regular width mean

Many Birkenstock models come in two widths: Narrow and Regular. Narrow can suit slim or standard feet, while regular offers more lateral space for wider feet.

More than one size and width combination may feel comfortable. A smaller size in regular width or a larger size in narrow width can sometimes work. Check support, lateral pressure and movement rather than relying on the label.

Between sizes or widths, check length, heel and toe space, and pressure at the sides.

Birkenstock sizing FAQs

Do Birkenstocks run large or small?

They can feel different from closed shoes because the footbed needs space in front and behind. A correct fit may initially feel roomier.

What if I am between sizes?

Avoid a sandal that is too short. Check that toes and heels do not touch the rims and the foot is centred.

What is the difference between narrow and regular?

Narrow can suit slimmer or standard feet. Regular provides more room at the sides for wider feet or a foot that feels squeezed.

Can my size differ between widths?

Sometimes nearby combinations can both work: a smaller size in regular width may feel similar to a larger size in narrow width. Check length, width, space and support on your foot.

Should the straps be very tight?

No. They should secure without squeezing. Having to overtighten may indicate an unsuitable size or width.

Why does there seem to be spare space?

The foot should not reach the rims. It moves as you walk and the sandal flexes; a little space helps keep it within the footbed.

The upper material is made from Birko-Flor®, a tough and skin-friendly synthetic material, which is presented here with a stylish nubuck look almost identical to genuine leather, both in texture and color.

Upper Material: Birko-Flor

Birko-Flor nubuck is made of an easy-to-clean and hygienic PVC plastic, to which a soft and breathable layer of nappa has been added on the inside. The surface appears similar to that of nubuck leather. It is a high quality material that is harmless to the skin and is worn with a pleasant feeling.

Internal sole: Upper layer of leather insole

Flexible and skin-friendly leather upholstery that welcomes the foot by adopting its shape and folding to its profile. The surface of the lining has a honeycomb structure, which makes it especially breathable, and thus allows a pleasant atmosphere inside the shoe even with intense physical activity.

Inner base material: Cork

Cork is a regenerable raw material that is extracted from the bark of the cork oak. It is a natural heat insulating product and has excellent damping properties.

Contact sole: EVA

EVA (ethyl vinyl acetate) is a high quality plastic, endowed with particular lightness and elasticity, which also offers extremely good damping properties. In this way, it is able to compensate for small irregularities in the floor and provides a soft cushioning of the steps when walking.
