Sugarhill Melissa Batik Black Pineapples Shirt Dress

The Melissa combines the shape of a 1950s shirtdress with a hand-finished batik pineapple print. We love the button-down front, longer length, relaxed neckline, cute tie waist, and pockets. This mustard yellow and black pineapple batik design was created in our seaside studio, so you won't find it on garments made by anyone else.

What is batik?

Batik is a wax dyeing technique applied to cloth. Batik is made by imprinting the wax design onto fabric using a copper stamp called a cap. The applied wax design resists dyes and thus allows the artisan to color selectively by soaking the fabric in one color, removing the wax with boiling water, and repeating the operation if multiple colors are desired. Due to the handmade nature of this process, each Batik printed item differs slightly, making it unique and very special.
